No comments about the Trek? At least he dismounts on the correct side ;-)
not that I was there or anything - but all reports from both editions of Cross Vegas (last year and this year) seem to indicate that the pro men were going fast enough to warrant the big rings.
If he can push the big cookie - more power to him. I wouldn't suspect that it was what was holding him back from winning the race, though.
He has the same arm problem I do - or did have, am working on, etc...
